Call-to-Action for Help! Please Act Now!

Aloha SurfriderKaua'i brothers and sisters ~
Kaua'i is asking for your help. We need letters sent to Hawai'i's Department of Health (DOH) to oppose a permit request that will result in farm waste being dumped into the ocean - deadline is 4:30pm on Dec. 3rd. Comments may be mailed or emailed (see below).

ISSUE: Polluted Ocean Discharge from Proposed Shrimp Farm

Those opposed to the permit request cite diminution of ocean recreational resources as a result of pollutants entering the ocean from the farm. The westside of Kaua'i is blessed with some of the purest seawater in the world and sunny growing conditions. The seawater brought to the facility and filtered through lava rock comes to the farm almost-nutrient-free and bacteria-free.

The shrimp-farm operation will change this:

Dumping "Seven hundred fifty pounds of nitrogen per day is unacceptable ..."

"Absolutely absurd" to allow dumping of waste where people surf. "This is ridiculous."

"Discharges will have serious environmental consequences ... We don’t want to see polluted beaches, not on Kaua'i."

Effluent from the farm is legally discharged into the ocean near a popular surf break known as Kinikinis - nasty smells emanate from the farm and discharge.

(note: the above link as reported by The Garden Island does not appear to be correct. I'll try to find the correct link.)

Aloha Clean Water Branch:

I would like to note my objection to requested permit by Sunrise Capital, owned by Integrated Aquaculture International, for the proposed shrimp-farm and more operation on the westside of Kaua'i, near Kekeha.

While we support job creation and local farming on Kaua'i, we ask simply that the the permit request be denied until Sunrise Capital has the capability to filter, discharge and return seawater into the ocean "almost-nutrient-free and bacteria-free" - similar to the condition the ocean water enters the farm.

I respectfully demand we ensure there is balance in recreational and professional pursuits on our island sanctuary. Failure to respect our kai and 'aina will destroy our heritage. It is our kuleana to protect our natural resources while we move forward to meet our needs for managed and intelligent progress.
